Heckler & Koch MP5 keluarga pistol mitraliur mulai diproduksi oleh perusahaan senjata Jerman Heckler & Koch tahun 1960an.

Sejarah Pengembangan
Pada tahun 1966 Heckler & Koch (HK) memperkenalkan MP5  dengan nama HK54. Pemberian nama ini berdasarkan tradisipenamaan lama Heckler & Koch, yaitu  "5" untuk pistol mitraliur, dan "4" yang berarti berkaliber 9 x 19 mm. Ketika senapan
ini resmi diadopsi oleh Jerman Barat untuk dipakai polisi dan penjaga perbatasan, nama baru HK54 mulai dipakai yaitu Maschinenpistole 5 atau MP5. Kemudian  MP5 ini diperkenalkan oleh unit antiteroris GSG-9  ke satuan anti teroris negara-negara Barat lainnya.

Varian
Modifikasi perbaikan pada MP5 telah banyak dilakukan oleh Heckler & Koch, dan telah banyak dilakukan perubahan pada komponen internal dan eksternal senapan ini dari model awalnya. Pada varian  MP5 pertama telah tersedia model dengan konfigurasi popor tetap (A2) atau popor lipat (A3) dan juga berbagai konfigurasi pelatuk.

Kemudian pengembangan besar selanjutnya adalah seri MP5SD ("SD" singkatan dari Schalldämpfer, yang berarti "suara teredam"), yang diperkenalkan pada tahun 1974. MP5SD berperedam suara yang terintegrasi serta laras khusus yang mengurangi kecepatan pelurunya menjadi sedikit dibawah kecepatan suara, sehingga sebagai hasilnya yaitu suara tembakan senapan MP5SD ini tidak terdengar dalam jarak lebih dari 15 meter.

Heckler & Koch MP5

Pada tahun 1976, diperkenalkan varian MP5K ("K" singkatan dari Kurz, yang artinya "pendek"), yang panjangnya hanya 325 mm sebagai jawaban dari permintaan agen penjual senapan HK di Afrika Selatan, yang melihat potensi penjualannya sebagai pelindung pribadi (bodyguard). Senapan MP5K ini memiliki pegangan depan vertikal untuk membantu menahan efek tendangan balik, alat bidik yang dibuat lebih kecil dan bahkan tas khusus yang dapat digunakan untuk menembak.

Heckler & Koch mengembangkan MP5N ("N" untuk Navy, "Angkatan Laut"), memenuhi kontrak khusus dengan Angkatan Laut Amerika Serikat, yang dibuat untuk memenuhi kebutuhan satuan elit angkatan laut. MP5N merupakan pengembangan dari MP5 standar yang dibuat dengan konfigurasi pelatuk angkatan laut, popor lipat, laras khusus yang bisa dipasang peredam suara serta komponen yang lebih tahan karat.

Varian MP5 terbaru adalah MP5F ("F" untuk French, "Perancis"), dikembangkan pada tahun 1999 untuk militer Perancis. dengan komponen internal yang baru untuk mengakomodasi peluru 9 mm yang lebih kuat. Perubahan eksternalyang dilakukan pada MP5F adalah penambahan pada popor baru dengan karet penahan, lubang untuk tali selempang di bagian kanan popor serta dua cantelan untuk tali selempang di bagian depan.
