Driven by Boeing’s active production line, the next-generation F-15EX jet enables pilots and mechanics to transition in a matter of days as opposed to years while delivering unmatched total life cycle costs.
Each F-15EX, in contrast, can carry nearly 30,000 pounds of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons. The F-35 can only carry 5,700 pounds, according to F-35 manufacturer Lockheed-Martin. The F-15EX is a fourth-generation-plus aircraft, meaning it's more advanced than previous F-15s but doesn't have the same features as fifth-generation aircraft like the F-35.
The F-15E serves as the basic model for the F-15I, F-15K, F-15S, F-15SA, and F-15SG export variants and is what the F-15EX improves on. Boeing says that the F-15EX would have 70% parts commonality with existing U.S. F-15s.
Because the Air Force already operates F-15s, transition to the F-15EX could be comparatively easy.
What's new to the F-15EX is an advanced radar and other subsystems that other countries' Eagles don't get. About 30% of the American F-15EX would be unique to the US military, they note.
Improvements includes the AMBER weapons rack to carry up to 22 AIM-9X Sidewinder and AMRAAM medium range air-to-air missiles, infra-red search and track, advanced avionics and electronics warfare equipment, AESA radar, and revised structure with a service life of 20,000 hours.
According to Air Force Magazine, "The new airplanes would have a substantially more powerful mission computer, new cockpit displays, a digital backbone, and the Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS) — an electronic warfare and threat identification system."
Commenting on the fighter a Boeing spokesperson told Air Force Technology: “The F-15EX is the most affordable way for the US Air Force to refresh its F-15C fighter fleet and solve its capacity issue now and into the future. It is an improvement over every other F-15 ever flown, incorporating technologies developed in part by the fighter’s international customers.
“Additionally, there is no need for new logistics chains, training squadrons, infrastructure modification at bases, programme offices or even weapons integration. The F-15EX can easily and affordably be integrated into the current US Air Force structure.
